Gate Street Barn Wedding | Jacqui & Steve

Winter weddings can sometimes be a challenge for a wedding photographer. The days are shorter, the weather tends to be more overcast, there is less natural light. As someone who likes to use natural light as much as possible this always presents an extra challenge. However, every wedding we shoot is a new experience, it’s never the same people, never the same light etc, so regardless of season our task is always the same: to create stunning, stylish images. We love the challenges that each wedding brings and love the thrill of producing fantastic results.

There were some stunning images from Jacqui and Steve’s wedding ceremony – the light on Jacqui’s face in the image above is incredible. She’s absolutely glowing, this type of image would have been ruined by flash going off, which is why I’d never use it for a wedding ceremony and rarely use it at all if I don’t have to. It does help if you have cameras like the Canon 5D3’s we use, that can almost see in the dark and pick out the subtle tones in the light, that the human eye simply cannot see. Black & White also works perfectly for this image, as it highlights emotion in faces without the distraction of colours.

We’ve shot at Gate Street Barn before, but this time around we also had the pleasure of working alongside one of favourite caterers, Louise at Just Jane Catering, which was fantastic, working with friends makes the day flow even better. I do like it when venues and caterers respect that a good wedding photographer is not there to disrupt the day, but to simply photograph it. We also had the pleasure of working with Hanna Wildman again, one of our recommended hair & make-up artists. Good hair and make-up makes our job as photographers so much easier and I recommend all brides to really consider it, it is well worth the money.

I was really pleased that we also got some lovely couple portraits captured of Jacqui and Steve. It’s always going to be harder in winter to shoot portraits. The short winter daylight hours and the weather make it challenging. No bride really wants to go walking over wet grass in their lovely wedding shoes, but fortunately, there are some lovely areas of foliage at the side of the barn and we were also lucky that the late afternoon light was actually really rather beautiful.
